GRANTING FUNDS
With applications
National Books Fund
The NATIONAL BOOKS FUND (NBF) is the older of the two granting funds within the Church Periodical Club. NBF has limited itself primarily to books and related materials for adults since the advent of the Miles of Pennies FUND.
Grant requests come from schools, libraries, individuals, agencies and parishes throughout the Anglican Communion. Funds to cover the requests are donated by individuals, parishes, dioceses and provinces. Receipts from ingatherings conducted in parishes on CPC Sundays are designated for NBF as are returns from a small NBF endowment fund. Friends of CPC are encouraged to contribute regularly to the fund or to sponsor specific requests for books.
A committee of the eight province representatives and an elected chairperson manage the NBF. Grants usually are awarded in the spring and the fall.
Miles of Pennies Fund
The Miles of Pennies FUND (MOP) was established in 1988 to provide books and related materials for children, pre-school through high school. A mile of pennies is $844.80.
The first grants were awarded in 1991. The original idea was to ask each diocese to collect “a mile of pennies;” solicit applications and make the grants. The response to the imaginative project was astounding. No one wanted to stop collecting pennies; the project was increasing attention to the ministry of the CPC. The project continues.
Grants are made for books, videos, tapes and electronic software and for costs of shipping recycled children’s books. Parishes and dioceses collect pennies throughout the year to meet these needs. Certificates noting the number of miles collected are awarded to dioceses and to parishes at the Church Periodical Club Triennial Meeting.
A committee of CPC volunteers and an elected chairperson administer the MOP Fund. Applications are reviewed as they are submitted and grants awarded at that time.
